Nonprofits have a tall order: make complex, high-impact decisions quickly and responsibly while operating with lean teams, time constraints, incomplete or inaccurate data, and limited funding. Thankfully, emerging artificial intelligence (AI) solutions can alleviate some of this pressure by automating administrative work, data analysis, reporting, and more. But faster task completion is only part of the equation. The harder work is ensuring that AI-generated insights are not only accurate but also applied in ways that reflect real-world context, community needs, and organizational priorities.So far, that translation is proving difficult. A recent <a href="https://virtuous.org/resource/the-2026-nonprofit-ai-adoption-report-download/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" class="">benchmark study</a> across 346 nonprofit organizations revealed that while 92% used AI in some form, only 7% reported major impact on what their teams could accomplish. This gap is what researchers describe as the “efficiency plateau”: most nonprofits are getting faster at what they already do, but the harder leap – from efficiency gains to broader organizational impact – is still underway.The challenge is not the technology itself, but the gap between AI-generated outputs and the decisions organizations ultimately need to make. “More AI” is not the solution here: AI can accelerate analysis, but it cannot determine what questions matter in the first place, nor contextualize insights within the realities of local communities and institutions. Data translators are not necessarily data scientists, rather, they are the connective tissue between the technical and the practical, converting information into action.

Who is a Data Translator?While AI is becoming an increasingly powerful multiplier for task execution, human expertise and judgment cannot be replicated in the nonprofit sphere. The most critical nonprofit decisions cannot be made without human and programmatic context. Critical decisions about where to responsibly deploy resources and funding, how to reach underserved communities, and how to optimize program design require an understanding of both the lived realities of the people being served and the practical challenges across disciplines. Think of a food bank deciding where to expand distribution services. AI could quickly identify neighborhoods with high indicators of need. But who determines which indicators matter most? Who validates those outputs against local conditions, social preferences, implementation feasibility, and partner readiness? AI and data can identify opportunities, but people ultimately determine which can deliver meaningful impact. Beyond technical analysis and interpretation of diverse data across sectors, data translators bring equally important qualitative skills: navigating organizational culture, storytelling, and building trust. Priyank recalled several examples of these skills in action from data translators trained through Data.org’s <a href="https://data.org/our-work/capacity/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Capacity Accelerator Network</a>: breaking down interdepartmental silos within governmental ministries to unlock new value from existing insurance and financial health data, and developing target intervention use cases for one of India’s first climate health vulnerability indexes. In each case, the role went beyond analysis. Data translators helped align stakeholders, resolve governance bottlenecks, and drive cross-functional collaboration, while grounding the data in the lived experiences that ultimately underpin the outputs. A human in the loop not only safeguards the quality of data outputs, but also strengthens an organization’s ability to act on them.

Amplifying CapabilitiesAs AI becomes more accessible, the role of the data translator is evolving beyond individual, program-specific decisions to organization-wide capability-building.In the early days of generative AI, tool adoption was the primary metric: how many employees are using AI today? Now, the more important question is not whether organizations adopt AI, but how they adopt and apply it. Which tools are worth building or buying? How should they be embedded in existing workflows, and where can they have the greatest impact? Who benefits? How can organizations move beyond one-off experiments and build sustainable processes that ensure investments create lasting value? Humans in the loop are proving critical to developing technology and AI solutions that enhance nonprofit operational efficiency.
