Although trust in global institutions is becoming increasingly fragmented, and gravitating towards more local institutions or sources, business remains one of the world’s <a href="https://www.edelman.com/insights/trust-divided-environment-rise-business-diplomacy" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">more trusted institutions</a> – a recognition that carries great responsibility. Companies are increasingly looked to not only for their financial results, but also to ensure that the benefits of their growth reach everyone, everywhere. This responsibility is heightened by a new reality: the constraints facing traditional social impact funders. As international development aid and philanthropic budgets tighten or are reallocated, it is essential that the new capital providers (businesses and mainstream investors) deliberately seek to drive economic and inclusive growth simultaneously.Companies can no longer rely on other actors to close the inclusion gap alone; they have the trust, resources, and expertise to make a difference. By deliberately leveraging their assets (from data and technology to market know-how and networks) alongside financial capital, the private sector can accelerate inclusive growth and have a strong business case for doing so. This is why it is essential to teach the leaders of the future that it is possible to harmonize, rather than compromise, profit and purpose.<a href="https://www.darden.virginia.edu/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The University of Virginia Darden Institute for Business in Society (Darden)</a> core mission is to improve the world through responsible leadership, preparing leaders to catalyze global business and social transformation simultaneously, rather than prioritizing one over the other. By using real case studies from businesses, Darden prepares students to lead on some of the most difficult and pressing social challenges. This body of work shows that when impact is factored into business decisions, and company assets and expertise are leveraged to accomplish impact-oriented objectives, it opens the door to driving commercially sustainable inclusive economic growth.&nbsp;

This case illustrates how a partnership between a multinational company and local microfinance institution to co-create digital financial products (like an instant emergency loan via mobile) can empower low-income borrowers and balance scalability with long-term impact.

What we hope to teach tomorrow’s leadersThese resources highlight that leaders can drive both financial health and inclusive economic growth through thoughtful, adaptive strategies that are underpinned by digitalization. Core themes include:1. Bridging financial and digital inclusion gaps for underserved communities. One of the key lessons from this body of work is identifying and bridging inclusion gaps for underserved populations. All cases underscore that future business leaders must actively design solutions to bring excluded groups into the formal, (and increasingly) digital economy. From responsive, emergency-based “Just-in-Time” digital loans in India delivered via SMS or WhatsApp, to expanding microloans to low-income women entrepreneurs in the U.S. with prepaid cards and mobile payments, business leaders can catalyze economic inclusion.2.&nbsp;Innovation, adaptation, and digitization as catalysts for scalable change. Digital transformation enables rapid reach and builds resilience. In India, Annapurna responded to the pandemic by using digital platforms like SMS, mobile apps, and online tools to provide access to loans and mentorship – ensuring that rural entrepreneurs received support even when in-person services were inaccessible. In the U.S., Grameen America shifted from paper-based processes to digital disbursements, increasing both their operational efficiency and making their model more scalable long-term. By embracing innovation – from fintech solutions to public-private partnerships – leaders can expand their impact footprint without sacrificing efficiency or stability.3.&nbsp;Leveraging assets beyond capital can accelerate impact. Another key lesson across these cases is that inclusive growth is not powered by funding alone. Companies can create stronger, more scalable outcomes when they bring their full range of assets to the table – including technology, data, operational expertise, and their broader network.4.&nbsp;Locally informed solutions create more relevant, lasting impact. Inclusive growth strategies work best when tailored to local needs. In Indonesia, the Mastercard Academy 2.0 program paired a digital-first model with local partners and on-the-ground support to reach micro and small enterprises in ways that reflected how they learn and operate. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach, the initiative combined training, mentorship, and access to finance through trusted delivery channels. This shows future leaders that scale is most effective when it is built on solutions that are responsive, context-specific, and rooted in local experience.These lessons demonstrate how business and social impact can be pursued in tandem. By harmonizing profit and purpose through the use of flexible capital, digital innovation, and locally grounded strategies, businesses can achieve financial sustainability and meaningful impact at the same time. In light of our changing world and limited resources from other sectors, there is greater urgency for companies to determine where they can apply their assets and expertise to drive inclusion and unlock new opportunities. Future leaders are being taught to approach global challenges and decision-making with this dual lens, where inclusive, adaptive strategies drive business success while also creating enduring, scalable benefits for society – proving that doing well and doing good can be one and the same.
