In emerging markets, traditional small-scale retailers can appear to observers as an anachronism. Research, however, seeking to modernize and digitize payments for traditional retailers in Mexico instead found a complex portrait of shopkeepers who were already technologically and financially sophisticated in many ways. This article summarizes findings from this study including finding incentives that go beyond business education and cash provision.
